Barriers to Healthcare Innovation

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

Replacing legacy medical equipment with innovative new technologies is challenging because in healthcare there is little room for error. A proven strategy for reducing upgrade risks is to select innovative technologies that can co-exist or ‘play’ with existing legacy systems. The transition is made easier when innovations don’t require complete overhauls of existing workflows and protocols. These factors and their implications were discussed during Harvard’s recent Digital Health cohort. We are integrating insights and lessons from the course to help clients sustainably deploy and benefit from BioBeat’s advanced remote patient monitoring (RPM) technologies.

BioBeat’s RPM solutions allow providers to innovate their healthcare delivery processes without fundamentally changing existing workflows. The company engineered its systems to safely coexist with legacy medical equipment, and still achieve broad improvements in care delivery, quality, and efficiency. Its RPM solutions are helping providers transition from labor-intensive legacy equipment to next-generation, intelligent decision-support solutions–without overhauling familiar workflows.

The heart of BioBeat's RPM system is a small, wireless, wearable patch that continuously measures and streams over a dozen vitals to cloud systems, where they are processed, analyzed, and displayed on connected monitoring stations, tablets, and smartphones. Artificial intelligence (AI) based predictive analyses continuously assess patients, alarm deteriorations, and help the medical staff prioritize care. The system automatically updates electronic health records and provides secure remote access to monitoring data by authorized medical staff and consulting specialists.

Providers are logically skeptical of innovations that require broad changes to familiar workflows and protocols. Thankfully, innovative designs like BioBeat’s RPM solutions avoid these pitfalls by integrating and coexisting with legacy technologies and practices. In this context, they enable providers to safely and sustainably innovate and digitally transform their care delivery services.
